REUSE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

1987
The report describes an investigation on the subject of recycling of worn out concrete pavements and the possibilities of reusing the crushed concrete as aggregates in high quality paving materials. The investigation included a recording of the data of the original concrete, a description of the state of the pavements before demolition and crushing as well as the testing of the quality of the recycled aggregates. Special attention was given to: Methods for determination of the water absorption of recycled aggregates. It was found that available standards for testing these properties were inadequate; and Alkali-silica reactivity in concrete based on recycled aggregates originating from concrete with severe alkali-silica reactions. Based on these investigations, a number of concrete types were produced in the laboratory, designed for pavement conditions, which to a great extent included microscopical analysis of the internal structure of the materials (A).
