Fundamental Lamb wave interaction around through defect in plate

Multimodal vibrations and dispersive characteristics of Lamb wave propagation sometimes cause a misinterpretation in defect location and sizing. A visualization of Lamb wave interactions with defect was carried out in our study to investigate the phenomenon of fundamental Lamb wave interaction around defect by using a reduced model of plate in ABAQUS. The reduced plate model used absorbing layers in plate to reduce the reflection from the edges of plate when a tone burst signal was introduced and excited the Lamb waves. The results visualized the wave propagation during the interactions of fundamental Lamb waves with oval shape of through defects in plates and explained the mode conversions around defects from the fundamental modes which propagated along with the reflected waves.
