AnApproach tothe ModularDesign ofMedical Research Systems

2006
Thispaperreports onthedesign anddevelopment ofa database system capable ofcollection, storage, andsharing ofinfertility research data, specifically non-surgical fertility treatments, excluding invitro fertilization techniques (nonIVF)' forresearchers attheUniversity ofVirginia's Department ofObstetrics andGynecology (UVAOBGYN). Thecreated system will beusedtostudy theeffectiveness of different fertilization treatment methods, andultimately improve infertility medical practice. Inaddition, thedesign aspects ofthis system areanimportant initial step towards thestandardization ofmedical research records, inany hospital andclinic, regardless ofmedical specialty. The presented system design requirements emphasize database modularity, datadistribution, andcompliance withHIPAA regulations.
