SCREENING METHODS FOR SPROUTING RESISTANCE IN WHEAT

The wheat crops in Sweden suffered from extensive sprouting damage at the beginning of the last decade. The Swedish breeders initiated a programme to breed more sprouting resistant cereal cultivars. The Swedish Council for Foresty and Agricultural Research gave financial support for a research project aimed at studying pre-harvest sprouting in more detail and to develop efficient breeding methods to combat the problem. Three Swedish Institutes took part in this work from 1963 to 1972, and in some cases to 1973. The methods presented in this report are the result of this fruitful cooporation.
