Research progress and kinetic model review of biological processes for purifying SO2 and NOx

SO2 and NOx emission into the environment will harm the environment and health. In recent years, the research of biological processes for purifying SO2 and NOx is very popular, because biological process was considered to be the most economical and green treatment method at present. In this review, five representative biological processes for purifying SO2 and NOx and the metabolic pathways of SO2 and NOx in microorganisms were summarized. Besides, the research progress of biological processes and their respective kinetic models of five biological processes for purifying SO2 and NOx were compared and analyzed, and the process characteristics, operation mechanism, advantages and disadvantages of each process were pointed out. Biotrickling filter and rotating drum biofilter have an excellent application prospect, and membrane bioreactor also has a certain potentiality. In addition, the future research trend and development trend of biological processes for purifying SO2 and NOx were put forward.
