Sur les traces du Lexicon Medicum Universale du chevalier de Jaucourt

EnglishIn keeping with what he himself declared, it has always been thought that the chevalier de Jaucourt had addressed himself to the editors of the Encyclopedie after the loss in a shipwreck of the complete manuscript of his six-volume Lexicon Medicum. In fact, the discovery of an advertisement in the Bibliotheque raisonnee, as well as a Prospectus for the Lexicon dated 1732, casts doubt on the existence of the lost manuscript. Consequently, one may show that most probably the concurrent publication of a six-volume Lexicon Medicum Universale by a German medical doctor named Burggrave (with the first volume out in 1733), spelt the end of the project for its two protagonists, Jaucourt and his friend Theodore Tronchin. One extant copy of the Prospectus is kept in Oxford and contains eleven articles, none of which were re-used, even by Jaucourt, in the Encyclopedie francaisConformement a ses propres dires, on a toujours cru que le chevalier de Jaucourt s’etait adresse aux editeurs de l’Encyclopedie apres la perte du manuscrit complet de son Lexicon Medicum en six volumes, dans un naufrage. Or la decouverte d’une annonce dans la Bibliotheque raisonnee, ainsi que d’un Prospectus du Lexicon datant de 1732, permettent de jeter un serieux doute sur l’existence du manuscrit perdu. Ainsi, on peut montrer qu’il est probable que la publication concurrente d’un Lexicon Medicum Universale en six volumes du medecin allemand Burggrave, dont le tome I parut en 1733, avait mis fin des cette date au projet de Jaucourt et de son ami Theodore Tronchin, les deux auteurs du projet de Lexicon. Le Prospectus, dont l’unique exemplaire est conserve a Oxford, comprend onze articles dont aucun ne sera repris meme par Jaucourt dans l’Encyclopedie
