Relationship of Soil Makeup in Growing Areas with Quality and Style Character of Tobacco

2013
To find out the relationship of soil makeup with the quality and style of tobacco leaves, the samples of soil and tobacco leaf were collected from 78 sites in 8 provinces where tobacco was grown with robust flavor style. The results showed that more than 60% of the areas were of sand soil, silty soil or loam soil. The intensity of robust flavor style and burnt-sweetness scent of leaves significantly positively correlated to the content of sand grain, while significantly negatively correlated to the contents of silt and clay grains in soil. When the content of sand grain was lower than 10%, the intensity of robust flavor style and burnt-sweetness scent of leaves decreased sharply with the decrease of sand grain content in soil. When the content of clay grain was higher than 25%,the intensity of robust flavor style of leaves decreased and that of burnt-sweetness scent decreased significantly. In conclusion, the soil with appropriately higher sand grain content and lower clay grain content is beneficial to the formation of tobacco quality and the enhancement of robust flavor style.
