Sewer pipes made of concrete - quality pays off: Study makes cost efficiency more transparent

2008
Many built objects disappearing underground are hardly perceived by the general public to an extent commensurate with their importance, or they are even only tolerated as a "necessary evil". Yet sewer systems are a prime example of engineering structures having a service life clearly exceeding that of many buildings and requiring top performance by technologists and engineers. In this respect, it is immensely important that these systems remain permanently tight. The findings of a study conducted by RWTH Aachen (Germany) show that standard, mass-produced items cannot meet these requirements.
