A Decomposition Algorithm Using the $\pi/4$ Mode Compact Polarimetric SAR for Urban Classification

The compact polarimetric (CP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can provide more target information than the conventional dual-pol or single-pol SAR configuration. However, the accurate delineation of the complex urban area is quite a challenge using the $\pi/4$ mode CP SAR. Based on the Stokes vector, we investigated the potential to use the $\pi/4$ mode CP SAR in the urban target detection. With the introducing parameter of $r$ , a newly modified algorithm was studied. Then, we simulated the $\pi/4$ mode CP data from the fully polarimetric (quad-pol) ALOS/PALSAR data and demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The algorithm elevated the double-bounce scattering but suppressed the volumetric scattering in urban areas.
