Genetic analysis of yield and its contributing traits in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) -A review

2002
Improvement of yield and its contributing traits presupposes a thorough knowledge of genetic analysi$ of wheat crop. It becomes necessary to review the available literature of genetics of yield and its contributing traits which can provide milestone to geneticist and wheat breeders. Many methodologies for the improvement of yield were developed and applied without examining whether hypothesis used for particular method were, satisfactory or not. The predictions of genetic gain made from selection therefore have not led to any improvement in wheal Moreover, the results obtained using different biometrical methods to study the genetics of yield and its contributing traits are not used subsequently for improvement. HeritabUity along with correlation amongst component characters must be considered. Even small correlation among desirable plant characters are useful. In this review, an attempt has been made to bring together the up-to-date information on different aspects of genetics of yield and its contributing traits in wheat.
