Investigation of the spectroscopic properties of acentric orthorhombic Nd3+:Gd2(MoO4)3 crystals

Abstract The absorption spectra and fluorescence lifetime of anisotropic orthorhombic crystal Nd 3+ :Gd 2 (Mo 4 O) 3 were measured. Based on these measurements, the Judd–Ofelt parameters and radiation lifetime were calculated, and the fluorescence quantum efficiency was obtained. The intrinsic fluorescence lifetime of the 4 F 3/2 term without the presence of concentration quenching is deduced to be 136 μs. The three Judd–Ofelt parameters obtained by the fit to absorption spectra in three mutually perpendicular directions, come out as: Ω 2 =8.54×10 −20 cm 2 , Ω 4 =5.53×10 −20 cm 2 and Ω 6 =6.78×10 −20 cm 2 . The spectral calculation using the Judd–Ofelt parameters shows that the radiative lifetime of 4 F 3/2 is close to the fluorescence lifetime and the fluorescence quantum efficiency ( η =0.86) is high.
