Some Remarks for a New Sociological Theory of Sustainability

Here we aimed to explore the opportunity for a rethinking—and, if necessary, a new formulation—of the theoretical and methodological categories for the analysis of social action in modified social spaces and times. While the sociological characterization of the Anthropocene society by means of quantitative data is increasingly applied in sociological investigations (such as in the intersectional approach or in terms of evidence regarding a platform society), the deductive process required to build a theoretical definition of the current processes is a long way from definitions that reflect the classical paradigms. An analytical exploration of certain environments of social actions—such as urban ones—will facilitate the understanding of these processes, making use of the social categories of time, space and relations, first by means of a traditional approach, and then taking into account those differences that define current trends according to the sustainability approach.
