The present studies indicate that the stratum corneum is a complex and dynamic border, despite the fact that it consists of cornified cell remnants embedded in multilamellar lipid sheets. Vesicles and lipid films, made of all stratum corneum lipids can be used to characterise the lipid barrier as well as the effects of external factors. In addition, the distrubed epidermal barrier can be restored within houes by topical stratum corneum lipids if suitable vehicle transport the lipids into the viable part of the epidermis
