Women and gender in the historiographies of societies with slaves (the French and British Caribbean, seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries)

2019
Despite the paucity of primary sources, the historiography on women and gender in societies with slaves of the English and French Caribbean has been expanding since the 1970s, although research on the French Antilles is less plentiful than its counterpart relating to the British West Indies. After a general presentation of Caribbean studies, the article analyses studies dealing with enslaved women, which have dominated the field for some time, then examines those on free women of colour and white women as well as on masculinities.
