Aberrant cytokine production fromtenosynovium indialysis associated amyloidosis

1992
supernatants oftenosynovial tissues frompatients withcarpal tunnel syndrome undergoing chronic haemodialysis contained interleukin (IL)1-like andIL6-like activity. Theseculture supernatants alsoinduced active proliferation ofrheumatoid synovial cells. Immunohistochemical analysis ofteno- synovial tissues showedtheaccumulation of mononuclear cells bearing CD14andHLA- DR antigens adjacent tothedeposition of amyloid protein ((32 microglobulin). These cells alsoreacted withantibodies toILland IL6respectively. Thesedatasuggest that multiple cytokines, including ILIandIL6, produced fromtenosynovial tissues inpatients withdialysis associated amyloidosis might induce theproliferation ofsynovial cells that, together withdeposition ofamyloid protein, might causecarpal tunnel syndrome.
