Can computers reason (and enjoy sex)

2015
What are the capabilities and limitations of computers? Some have approached this question from a more mathematical perspective. For example we can formally prove that computers can't solve the Halting Problem, which is just one example of a broader result proved nearly a century ago by K. Godel, with an important implication to computer science: there exist inherently algorithmic problems for which there is no complete and correct algorithm. This talk, however, will explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence and the capabilities and limitations of computers from a more philosophical framework, drawing on philosophy of mind to ask the question whether or not computers can reason--either now, or at any time in the future. The question relates also to whether computers can be conscious, and whether the so-called Singularity of R. Kurzweil might one day be possible. Will humans be able to download our minds to a computer?
