Device for fixing the first and second cervical vertebra

1997
A fixing screw (1) for fixing an atlas and an axis is made of a self tapping screw which has a blunt point (15) with two flutes (14) and a thread portion. The fixing screw is inserted into a intervertebral part of an atlas and an axis using a guide wire so that the fixing screw engages the surfaces of the atlas and the axis thereby to fix the atlas and the axis. Dimensions of the fixing screw are selected so that the fixing screw securely engages the atlas and the axis and so that the fixing screw does not protrude from the intervertebral part; a clamp comprising a pair of U-shaped hooks 31 for preventing relative movement of the axis and atlas.
