This article discusses three Colombian first-person, narrative documentaries: De(s)amparo, polifonia familiar (2002), by Gustavo Fernandez Vega, Carlos Pizarro. Un guerrero de Paz (2010) by Maria Jose Pizarro Rodriguez, and Carta a una sombra by Miguel Salazar and Daniela Abad (2015). Each filmmaker resorts to the work of memory to reflect on the impact that the assassination of a loved one had on them and their relatives during the late 1990s, a period of escalating political violence in Colombia. These three films are at the forefront of an innovative trend in documentary production in Colombia, one that allows for the inclusion of grief and mourning, personal experience, and critical examination of family relationships.
