Research progress on the rapid, real time, on line, in situ monitoring water quality biochemical oxygen demand

2018
Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is one of the most important parameters in estimating the water quality and its self-cleaning ability. It represented the oxygen demand in biochemical oxidation process in the wastewater treatment process and environmental repair. The standard method needs 5-day incubation, and the analytical error is very huge. Rapid determination proceeded over forty years, but few applications stand until now. In this article, the author concluded the developments of current rapid BOD determination methods and its drawbacks. A new BOD online determination method and analytical instrument based on natively cultivated plug-flow biofilm reactor was developed and applied in situ extensively.
