Towards a methodology for safety assessment of in-vehicle information systems: the SafeTE project

2006
The objective of the SafeTE project is to develop a methodology for summative (post-production) safety evaluation of in-vehicle information systems. The project is run by the Swedish Road Administration and conducted by Volvo Technology and the Swedish National Transport Research Institute (VTI). The SafeTE methodology involves three main sub-methods: (1) A checklist completed by HMI experts that provides a general, system-level, assessment, (2) visual demand measurement based on automated gaze analysis and (3) a visual detection task method. The two latter methods provide a more detailed assessment of the visual and cognitive demand respectively on the functional level. The methodology also features a method for specifying the evaluation scenarios. This paper provides an overview of the general approach adopted in the project and the results achieved so far (A).
