Constructive Connections : building resilience of families affected by the criminal justice system : final report
2020
The Stimulus for the Study NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde had
identified through previous research that there
was a need to engage with families that are
affected by the criminal justice system in order
to improve the experience for children and
young people. A consortium of two universities supporting a
Scottish voluntary organisation that works
solely on behalf of families affected by
imprisonment was commissioned to
undertake a participative research project over
18 months to elicit from children, young
people, their families and involved
professionals what the problems were and to
co-produce proposed solutions.
An estimated 27,000 children are affected
each year by parental incarceration in
Scotland. GIRFEC - Getting It Right For Every
Child, now enshrined in Scottish legislation
through the Children and Young People
(Scotland) Act 2014, is a sound building block
for supporting children whose parents come
into contact with the criminal justice system.
