The invention relates to a method for warning the driver of a motor vehicle (1) before the presence of an object (5) in the area (6) of the motor vehicle (1) by displaying images (BA) of the area (6) on a display device of the motor vehicle (1), comprising the steps of: - Acquiring a camera image (BK) around (6) by means of a camera (3) of the motor vehicle (1) and identifying the object (5) in the camera image (BK) - Determining an expected trajectory (9) of the motor vehicle (1), - Generating a display image (BA) on the basis of the camera image (BK), wherein the display image (BA) is a layered visual representation of the likely trajectory (9), and displaying the display image (BA) on said display means, - Determining a current position of the object (5) relative to the expected trajectory (9) and - Varying the optical representation of the trajectory (9) in the display image (BA) depending on the relative position.
