Ionization of sodium vapour by nanosecond resonant laser pulses

The system of equations describing the process of avalanche ionization in a low density sodium vapour excited by a nanosecond resonance laser pulse is solved. The contribution of Penning ionization of highly excited atoms populated by energy pooling collisions is discussed.
