The Performance of Nigeria's Fishery Sector: an Empirical Analysis, 1976—85

The fishery sector performed adequately in 1981 and 1982 when the rate of growth of domestic fish production outweighed that of fish demand. For the other periods, performance was discouraging. Government policies: institutional development research, credit, infrastructure, allocative, etc. failed to reverse the sector's poor performance. However, allocation on capital programmes by both Federal and State governments showed steady increases for the period 1976-85. Urgent strategies and policies must be set in motion in order to fully exploit the potentials of Nigeria's fishery sector.
