Entre literatura e historia: notas sobre la cultura de los pazos

espanolJunto a las grandes fabricas monasticas y a los miles de iglesias parroquiales y santuarios locales, los pazos completan el formidable patrimonio arquitectonico, mayoritariamente barroco, que puede verse en el paisaje gallego y que refleja bien la identidad de los grupos que dominaban la sociedad previa a la revolucion liberal. De la hidalguia de pazo se conoce su origen, la formacion y constitucion de los patrimonios y los mecanismos de reproduccion social, pero se sabe poco, en cambio, de su vida cotidiana, incluyendo aqui las formas de sociabilidad y los habitos culturales, de ahi el frecuente recurso a la literatura de la segunda mitad del XIXy primeros anos del XXpara abordar estas cuestiones. Sin embargo, es dudoso que los personajes, en general rudos y violentos, creados por la Pardo Bazan, Valle-Inclan y Otero Pedrayo, entre otros, puedan servir de verdadero retrato de la realidad historica, matizada y diversa, segun revelan los inventarios y otros documentos de los archivos pacegos que precisarian de estudios detenidos. EnglishThe formidable, mainly baroque, architectural heritage of the Galician countryside, with its great monastic enterprises and thousands of parish churches and local sanctuaries would be incomplete without the pazos, or country estates. This ensemble of structures accurately reflects the groups that dominated society prior to the liberal revolution. While the origins of the landed gentry, the formation and constitution of their estates and their social reproduction mechanisms are known, their daily life, formsof sociability and cultural habits remain obscure. Thus, recourse is often made to the literature of the second half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century to address these themes. However, the generally rude and violent characters created by Pardo Bazan, Valle-Inclan, Otero Pedrayo and others do not accurately portray the nuanced and diverse historical reality that is reflected in inventories and other documents from estate archives, which merit careful study.
