A projection of the development of high capacity communications satellites in the 1980s

The need for higher capacity communications satellites in the 1980s and 1990s will require new approaches to satellite design and space segment configuration. Design decisions are complicated by uncertainties in the availability of expendable launch vehicles and the space transport system. Other issues which need to be fully understood include projections of demand for satellite systems and the acceptability of more efficient signaling methods.
