Electrical Stimulation to Promote Neuronal Growth

This chapter focuses on the effect that a constant DC electric field exerts on a neuron. Depending on how the DC electric field is configured, either the neuron’s growth is simply promoted, or its axon is directed. Equivalent electrical circuit modeling is used to analyze the direct physical role that a DC electric field plays in these two phenomena. Based on these analyses, potential biophysical mechanisms are proposed. While the biomolecular pathways for the promotive effects are still pending elucidation, a correct and clear understanding on the direct physical effects of the DC electric field is the crucial first step to approach the quest for an overall mechanism.
