ABSTRACTA zig-zag defect free ferroelectric liquid crystal display exhibiting fast response speed ( -I. =40 ,a s), high contrast ratio (230:1), monostability with grayscale capability has been fabricated by using an especially developed polyimide alignment films and by adopting polymer stabilization with a mesogenic side-chain polymer. Some electrooptic performance ofthis display as a field sequential type color LCD are described and demonstrated. 1. INTRODUCTIONFerroelectric liquid crystal displays (FLCDs) form the basis of a rapidly developingtechnology of significant potential impact in display applications, in particular, such as video image displays by taking advantage of their fast response speed. However, it is hard to fabricate a zig-zag defect-free FLCD that is capable of exhibiting high contrast ratio of over 100:1.
