Effect of environment on the oxidation of ingot-processed iron aluminides
2001
Abstract The oxidation behavior of iron aluminides was investigated in various environments at 900 to 1200 °C. The effect of water vapor on total specimen mass gain was minimal. At 1000 and 1100 °C, the mass gain of Fe–28at.%Al–5Cr without Zr was a factor of 2 or more higher in air than in oxygen or Ar–20%O 2 . Nitride formation beneath the external Al 2 O 3 layer was observed in air.
