The study of the effect of life skills training on students' mental health and self-esteem

From the educational perspective, teen years   is the most difficult period  of human  life .It is a transition from childhood to adulthood in which contemporarily with  social, emotional and physical changes, self-esteem and self-respect have been  completed. Due to special problems in this age and internal  and environmental challenges  in this period, one of the  most important individual's characteristics ,  it means self-esteem, encounters problem. The purpose of  this  article is to  study the effect of life skills training on  high school girl students' mental health and self-esteem in Qom city. Method: The research method is semi-experimental with pretest, post test and control group. The population are all high school students in grade three in Qom city. The sampling method was classified random one and 100 student were allocated to experimental and control  groups. The measures  were Coldberg's mental health and Coopersmith's self-esteem . To  analyze the data, SPSS ,descriptive  statistics, inferential statistics and independent test were used. Findings: The results showed that the training of mental health life skills on physical signs, anxiety and insomnia is significant , but it is not meaningful on social inactivation and depression. Life skills  training is significant on self-esteem as a whole , social self-esteem and educational self-esteem but not on familial self-esteem. Conclusion: Individuals with better life skills in the society can better express themselves and it leads to improve self-esteem. Therefore, it seems that with the use of social skills to adolescents, their positive self-concept and self-esteem will increase. Key words : life skills training, mental health, self-esteem
