Components of Growth of Income Maintenance Expenditure in Ireland 1951-1979

This paper examines the growth in the share of GDP of four income maintenance programmes (old age pensions, children's allowances, unemployment benefits and sickness cash benefits) for the period 1951-1979 in terms of the influence of three factors — demographic changes, changes in eligibility for benefits and changes in average benefit payments. I INTRODUCTION
