Performance of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) varieties in rain fed conditions in North-Eastern hill region

2013
Present study was conducted under Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Yachuli district Lower Subansiri, Arunachal Pradesh. The field experiment was conducted under rain fed hill condition. A comparative study was done to assess two different cultivars for recommendation under rainfed condition of north eastern hill region. The experimental site was selected to Siiro and  manipolyang  villages to find out the suitable tomato varieties in the Ziro valley of Arunachal hills. The varieties of tomato H-86 (Kashi Vishesh) and Narendra Tomato-6 (NDT-4) were evaluated for yield and benefit: cost ratio (B:C ratio) under rain fed hill condition. It was concluded from the experiment that the higher yield 320 quintal/ha was recorded in variety cultivar H-86 (Kashi Vishesh) while lower yield 230 quintal/ha was recorded under variety Narendra Tomato-6 (NDT-4). The B:C ratio (2.4:1) was also higher in cultivar H-86 (Kashi Vishesh) while it was lower (1.7:1) in  Narendra Tomato-6 (NDT-4). The variety H-86 well adopted and suitable for growing under this region but insect pest problems was noticed and yield also affected in Narendra tomato-6 under rain fed hill conditions. Therefore, it was find out from the present experiment the cultivar H-86 (Kashi Vishesh) was suitable and recommended but the Narendra tomato-6 was unsuitable for rainfed hill region.
