Discussion about Assay Method of Eugenol in Flos Caryophylli in Chinese Pharmacopoeia(Edition 2010)

Objective To improve the method of determination of eugenol in Flos Caryophylli.Methods The content of eugenol was determined by HPLC at 280 nm detection wavelength with methanol-1 % glacial acetic acid(55 ∶ 45) as mobile phase.The modified assay method of eugenol in Flos Caryophylli was compared with the pharmacopoeia method.Results The modified method for determination of eugenol was superior to the pharmacopoeia method.This method was sensitive,accurate and reproducible.Eugenol in the range of 0.1605~9.6504 μg was linear,r=0.9999,average recovery was 100.72 %,and RSD=0.82 %.Conclusion The modified method can be used for the quality control of Flos Caryophylli,and the results will supply evidence for the assay of Flos Caryophylli.
