Combined power market and power grid modeling: First results of the project SystemKontext

2017
The energy turnaround in Europe's and especially Germany's energy system raises various questions concerning the European energy market as well as the electrical power grids in Germany and all over Europe. An enabler to cope with these questions is the possibility to simulate the respective structure of market mechanisms and electrical power transmission. Because of the complexity of both systems these models can get quite complex. The main goal of the project “SystemKontext” at Fraunhofer IWES is to elaborate at which level of detail different parts of the energy system have to be modelled to obtain valid and precise results especially with a focus on Germany. Within the project SystemKontext the market model “SCOPE” developed at Fraunhofer IWES is coupled with an electric power flow model of the German transmission system. This paper describes the basic functionalities and working principles of both models and the respective steps and enhancements to couple power market results and the power grid model. As application examples at first two separate applications for the power market model and the power grid model are presented. On the one hand a future energy scenario resulting from the market model is given which especially emphasizes the coupling of the energy sectors power, heat and transportation. On the other hand a redispatch algorithm as example for an application using the power grid model is introduced. As a first coupled application a contingency analysis using concrete market results of one year's hourly values is investigated in the power grid model.
