Hybrid Fuzzy Logic Control Scheme of the PEM Fuel Cell Air Feed System

The primary control task of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell air feed system is to regulate the oxygen excess ratio (OER). A new hybrid fuzzy logic control (FLC) scheme is proposed in this paper to drive OER to the desired value, thus the oxygen starvation is effectively avoided. The hybrid controller consists of the fuzzy logic controller, the fuzzy self-tuning (FST) PID controller and the switching system, where the optimal controller is selected in real-time by the switching system upon the tracking error of OER. The proposed hybrid FLC scheme demonstrates the advantages of quick response and high tracking accuracy. Moreover, it is also applicable to PEM fuel cell systems with fluctuating stack current and air leakage fault.
