Synthesis of chitosan-ferulic acid conjugated poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer film for an improved wound healing

2020
Abstract The synthesis of a new and functionally effective antioxidant polymer film containing chitosan (CS)-dietary phenol ferulic acid (FA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is reported. The as-formulated CS-FA-PVA blended film was pale yellow color, flexible, non-sticky with little elastic nature. The films were characterized by FTIR, mechanical testing, SEM and TGA. The antioxidant activity of polymer blend film was evaluated by DPPH and ABTS assay; whereas antimicrobial activity was demonstrated by agar-diffusion method. The antioxidant assays have shown excellent free radical scavenging as compared to the standard ascorbic acid. The CS-FA-PVA film has shown significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. The cytotoxicity was assessed in L929 mouse fibroblast cell lines by MTT assay and the results concluded no significant cytotoxic was observed for CS-FAPVA blend film on day 1 (
