Pedestrian delay during crossing at uncontrolled locations

2012
Pedestrian delay data was collected at 17 locations of uncontrolled crossing in five cities of the country by videography. The cities identified are Dehli, Chandigarh in the North, and Chemnai, Erode and Coimbatore in the South. The data was analyzed to discover the central tendency of delay for different age and gender groups. The average delay at all locations is found to be 9.6 s. Female and older pedestrians are found to wait more compared to other gender and age groups. The variation of delay with respect to road width and crossing speed is also presented. The delay is found to to decrease with increasing crossing speed and depends on traffic volume as well. The relation between conflicting traffic volume and delay is also established.
