Performance Assessment of a novel Integrated Multi-Drives Topology for Automotive Applications

2018
This paper examines the properties of an innovative integrated multi-drives configuration, obtained through a multi-winding induction machine whose windings are electrically series connected to each other, leading to a rotating autotransformer structure. This multi-drive topology is able to handle hybrid storage systems, operating at different voltage levels and it can be mechanically coupled to the drivetrain of electric or hybrid electric vehicles. The proposed solution allows multi-directional power flows between the machine and the storage units at high efficiency, featuring the typical advantages related to autotransformers, e.g. in terms of efficiency, sizing and costs. A proper control strategy has been implemented to ensure the demanded torque and magnetizing flux, taking into account the state of charge and power capability of each storage unit. An energy management strategy has been validated for different driving conditions by simulations and experimental tests.
