Heat release during upward motion of a steam-water mixture along a cooled surface

Stationary heat transfer to a heat-absorbing surface during upward motion of a low velocity steam-water flow was studied to determine characteristics of water-cooled, passive heat removal systems in nuclear power plants. To determine the closing relations describing the intensity of the heat transfer, experimental investigations were performed using four physical models with horizontal and vertical arrangement of the heat absorbing surface (outer or inner surface of a pipe or concentric ring-shaped channel). The materials used were stainless steel and copper. Experimental results were used to confirm the appropriate equations and parameters for thermodynamic properties of the heat exchangers under various operating conditions. 7 refs., 5 figs.
