The impact of logics-based immigrant context on migrant family enterprises

2021
We conceptualize immigrant context as exposure to foreign institutional logics and examine how such exposure may impact migrant family businesses. There are two parts to this chapter. In the first part we develop a framework that delineates the nature of logics-based immigrant context and its implications for immigrants. Our framework covers three aspects. First, we offer a typology of logics differences that immigrants may encounter between home and host country. Second, we examine the types of response strategies they may adopt with regard to such conflicting logics. And third, we highlight three key factors that may impact the immigrants responses: adherence to logics, legitimacy concerns and identity commitment. In the second part, we link logics-based immigrant context specifically to how migrant business families operate, focusing in particular on their transgenerational intent. We discuss four logics (family, business family, market, and mainstream/ethnic) as playing a role in this matter.
