2013
Passengers are carrying heavy luggage while using train service. During this time, they are expecting service from others to bring the luggage at railway station. Some individuals are come forward to extend the services to the passengers at railway station. Such individuals are termed as porters. They have received license from the railway department and getting service charge from the passengers as coolie. This paper highlights the pattern of working of licensed coolie porters. The study area is Madurai Railway Station. The study is confined to the pattern of working of licensed coolie porters working in Madurai junction. For the present study, primary data were collected from licensed coolie porters with the help of a structured interview schedule. In order to study the pattern of working of the porters, the researcher has analyzed the various socio-economic factors such as a age, marital status, type of family, literacy, size of the family, length of the service, income and the like. The percentage analysis and chi-square test are used to find the significant relationship prevailing the between the age, literacy level, average income, size of family, monthly expenditure, experience, borrowings and the pattern of working of the respondents. The analysis clearly shows that six factors such as age, literacy level, average income expenditure, size of the family and monthly expenditure do not influence the pattern of working of the respondents and only one factor i.e. borrowings does influence the level of attitude of porters towards the pattern of working of the respondents at the Madurai Railway Station.
