A method of controlling a zoom lens camera comprising a lens system having a front lens group (L1) and a rear lens group (L2); a first motor (18) for moving said front lens group (L1); a second motor (21) to move said rear lens group (L2); a first pulse encoder (42) for controlling the angular position of said first motor (18) and a second pulse encoder (43) for controlling the angular position of said second motor (21); wherein measuring the difference image plane position between the wide-angle position and the telephoto position for the drive pulse numbers of the motors (18, 21), so as to adjust zoom and optical image focus adjustment without mechanical zoom setting or mechanical adjustment of the optical image draw.
