Abstract The attitude of the Coloureds towards work - or at least ofan appreciable percentage of the Coloureds - can be defined as work-shy. Most probably work-shyness occurs in almost every community, but its extent is usually not such that it can be regarded as a social problem. The extent of work-shyness amongst the Coloureds is, however, such that it does constitute a social problem. A work-shy person can be defined as someone who is able to work and ought to work, but does not want to because he holds a different value-orientation towards work. Work-shyness is a manifestation of a disposition, an inner condition, a deep-rooted attitude and way of living, which is fundamentally interwoven with the entire personality and existence of the individual.
