Structure and mechanical properties of PMMA/GF/Perlon composite for orthopedic prostheses

2020
Abstract Composites outdo their basic materials because they combine the best properties offered by each one separately. They have proven their usefulness in many technical applications especially in the production of prostheses for amputees and disabled persons. The purpose of this study is to characterize the structure and mechanical properties of a PMMA / fiberglass / Perlon composite in order to investigate possible substitutions. The current process used to manufacture prostheses is presented. The first part of the study is concerned with the composite structure which has been identified as being homogeneous. The second part is dedicated to mechanical properties assessment. Impact fracture (Kcu), fracture toughness (GIC) and tensile behavior properties (E, σy, σr, ey and er) are measured and analyzed using compression molded plates. The obtained results are mostly consistent with those of literature.
