Teaching and learning: History as inquiry

This chapter explores the concept of historical inquiry and student-centered inquiry methodologies and associated pedagogies. Historical inquiry is driven by questions about the past that are developed as hypotheses and validated through research. The shift to an inquiry-centered pedagogy can be challenging for both teachers and students, but the rewards are self-evident as students develop the skills to think critically, work collaboratively and communicate clearly. These are skills that transcend history and will stand students in good stead as they enter an increasingly fluid and dynamic world of further learning and work at the completion of their secondary schooling.
