A Study of Odor Measurement Method Using Olfactory in the Field

2020
Odor is sensory pollution that can be easily recognized in living environments, causing displeasure people’s daily lives. In order to manage such odors, the government should first clearly identify the odor phenomenon around the sources. In Korea, a method is applied to collect air from a site and measure the concentration of dilution and 'designated offensive odor substances'. Germany and the U.S. are managing odors by a mixed standard of frequency and concentration, rather than by regulating them with their measurement concentration. However, it is difficult to measure the frequency of odors in the field, and in Germany, a grid is formed at a certain interval to determine the frequency of odors occurring, and a grid method is used to measure the frequency of odors during the total visit by a olfactometry panels based on statistical rules for a period of six months or one year. In this study, The following conclusion was reached through a study on how to investigate odour by applying the German grid method to domestic environmental base facilities. First, it was able to reflect seasonal effects, time changes, and types of odors. Thus, it contributed to the establishment of the cause of the odor, the affected areas and countermeasures. Second, the domestic version from the German grid method allows for Investigation of odor conditions. Third, recording the type and intensity of odors when measuring field odor helps analyze the more obvious effects when selecting the cause site. Fourth, nevertheless, there are practical difficulties in applying field odor in Korea, but difficulties in using the IoT technology can be improved.
