Preliminary estimation of optical effects stimulated by artificial proton beams in the Earth's atmosphere

1993
ABSTRACT An experiment with artificial proton aurora would be a new step of investigation of physical and chemicalprocesses in ionosphere. The spatial distribution of the emission intensity in the zone of injection of p, H and Hbeams is discussed. The beam intensity that would be necessary for observation of the optical effects from the ground is estimated. 1.INTRODUCTION Sone2 years ago the electron beam space experiments were carried out. A lot of interesting results wereobtained ' . Modem science and technology give a possibility to carry out similar experiments for proton-hydrogenatom beams . The project "Artificial pr2t9n aurora" could be a serious step for investigation of the aurora! processes. Proton-H atom transport models can be used to obtain preliminary estimation of the future experimental results. - in this paper we try to estimate possible optical effects stimulated by p, H and H artificial beams in the atmosphere. Emissions in 1NG(X4278), 2PG(X337l) and HaGk6563) bands were considered.2. CALCULATION MODELWe consider monoenergetic p, H and H beams with initial erergies 2 MeV. The source is located at an altitude 700
