Theories in Health Behavior for Children

2020
Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), the Social/Health Ecological Model (SEM), Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the Positive Psychological Model (PPM), and Stages of Change Theory (SOC) have all demonstrated their utility as grounds for understanding and changing health behaviors in children and youth. This chapter will explore each of these theories and their evidence for eliciting positive changes in children’s health-related behaviors, including the promotion of physical activity, reduced screen time, higher intake of fruits and vegetables, and decreased risk of substance use and sexually risky behaviors.
