Progress on Technology of Aeration in Composting

Based on importance of aeration in composting process,the progress on aeration in composting including aeration mode,aeration control mode and aeration rate was reviewed. The passive aeration mode was feasibly applied for agricultural waste composting while forced aeration was the option for municipal solid waste composting. Aiming at optimizing composting process and improving composting quality,two aeration control modes including time control and time-temperature feedback were widely used in composting. Aeration rate was the key factor of energy consumption of composting,and energy consumption of composting with various kinds of waste showed big difference due to complex characteristics of waste and different aeration design methods. In addition,impacts of aeration on pile temperature and nutrients transformation were discussed,and there was a big difference of pile temperature with different aeration mode. The aeration will affect nutrient transformation.
