Low head Freudenau brings power to Vienna

In October this year, the first unit of the Freudenau low head hydropower plant on the River Danube was commissioned. The 172 MW power plant, built at a cost of over $1 billion, will not only use six 7.5 m diameter Kaplan bulb turbines - the largest rotors in Europe - but will also have environmental benefits, including allowing the controlled recharging of the depleted water table.
